Rehearsals

Observers and prospective new members are welcome to attend a rehearsal. Simply come along to our regular rehearsals and introduce yourself to one of our members and you will be made welcome. You can choose to simply observe or join in and sing along.

We are a non-auditioning choir, but it will help if you can sing in tune and can read music to some extent. You may attend up to three times before deciding that being a member of the choir is for you.

Youth Membership

YOUTH MEMBERSHIP

Napier Civic Choir welcomes students and offers free youth membership.

At our weekly Tuesday night rehearsals, students are warmly welcomed into a warm, supportive environment.  For those who want to come to rehearsals but have difficulty getting there, we arrange transport with a choir member.

We believe that nurturing a love of music from a young age has positive benefits and can be life-changing for young people.  Choir members greatly appreciate and enjoy the presence of student members, who bring energy and enthusiasm to rehearsals and performances.

Students gain in confidence, enlarge their repertoire and appreciate the opportunities to rehearse and perform major choral works with more experienced choral singers.

With these thoughts on youth in mind, the choir now offers much reduced rates for student, family and school groups. See our ticketing information for more details.

HIDDEN BENEFITS

Hidden Benefits

ENJOY THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF GROUP SINGING

The love of good music, and the joy of performing to an appreciative audience are at the heart of the Napier Civic Choir, and its collaborator the Hawke's Bay Orchestra.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to have singing in their lives will know how good it makes you feel, and these days, the health benefits of singing are increasingly recognised for their positive impact on physical, mental and social well-being.  The effects are impressive.  Singing is well known for strengthening the immune system. It provides a physical workout for the lungs, improves posture, helps with sleep, and improves mental alertness.  Singing is a natural anti-depressive, lowering stress levels by increasing oxytocin which alleviates stress and anxiety.

You may be someone who enjoys listening to music or maybe singing in the shower from time to time, but all of these health and social benefits of group singing may make you think about joining a choir.  It really doesn’t matter whether you become a world-class singer or not.  The idea is to have fun singing in a group and be uplifted and destressed.  At the same time, you will be expanding your vocal ability and grasping the opportunity to engage directly with wonderful music, not as a passive listener but actually performing it yourself!
